Amelia dressed for her motherâs party as carefully as an assassin preparing for a kill.
Itâd been an excruciating week. Telling Liss exactly how attractive she found her was the single most humiliating event of Ameliaâs entire thirty-three years. That night sheâd laid in bed for hours, praying for early dementia to wipe her memory, Eternal Sunshineâstyle. Instead, a hideously heightened version of their lunch played on loop. By 2:00 a.m., all Amelia could picture was herself pinning a petrified Liss to the ground to scream in her face, âI LOVE HOT MUSICIANS WITH ACCENTS, WHICH MEANS I LOVE YOU!!â
As a serial monogamist and die-hard romantic, Amelia was unaccustomed to concepts like rebound sex or one-night stands. Deep down, she didnât really believe âcasualâ sex existedâthe idea that you could have sex with someone without exchanging a piece of your soul was foreign. But everyone else her age seemed to be hooking up all the time. Wasnât this the perfect time to try it? And wasnât Liss the perfect person to be trying it with? No-strings-attached sexiness was something adults in full control of their bodies and emotions did all the time. Amelia Kelly decided it was about time she grew up and gave it a red-hot go.
Sheâd obviously freaked Liss out with her carnal Christmas list and hadnât made things better by chucking a tanty then storming off like a child. But at least sheâd successfully avoided her all week, maybe, hopefully, giving Liss a chance to miss her. Obviously, they had a connection; Liss said she was attracted to her, too. There werenât any real reasons why they couldnât hook up, not now they were both single.
On the night of her motherâs birthday, a full moon the size of a whale hung over Pigface Bay, its brilliance bleaching the beach as if for a film shoot.
Amelia spent most of the afternoon baking and decorating and setting everything up. Now, she swiveled in front of the mirror in the Yellow Cottage, assessing every inch of her golden curves. Parkerâs light blue string bikini left only the best bits to the imagination. The tiny bottom was high cut and tied at her hipbones while the triangle halter top clung to her C-cups. Her freshly blown-out hair waterfalled down her back. Gloss glistened on her lips. The combined effect would hopefully eliminate all memories of Amelia being weepy or stinky or hopelessly desperate. Admittedly, a long shot. But one worth taking aim at. Amelia slipped on her fringed kimono and blew herself a kiss. Having a banginâ bod was not a personal achievement, but she could work it. And if Matty was right, and queer women were just as attracted to a chick in a bikini as straight guys were, Liss Chambers didnât know what the hell was about to hit her.
Amelia arrived late, assuming Liss, who didnât really know anyone except Jarrah, would be sitting alone, adorably awkward and eager for her company. Amelia was wrong. Evidently this turtle mission had bonded the group.
